Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can Dr. Liu be my primary care provider (PCP)?
Unfortunately, no. Although Dr. Liu is trained as a primary care physician, the nature of our functional medicine clinic requires all patient's to have a PCP for routine health maintenance and other medical concerns. Functional medicine is considered complementary to your existing medical care.
2. Do I have to have a chronic medical illness to participate in Soma & Psyche?
Anyone can benefit from our unique approach that bridges comprehensive medicine and mental healthcare. So, no, you do not need to be working through a chronic medical condition. Many patients seek us out in order to develop more energy and resilience for daily life, to age gracefully, and to take preventive measures to maximize their health.
3. Do we take insurance?
No, we do not bill insurance companies directly. We will work with you to provide a "superbill" that you may be able to submit to your medical insurance for reimbursement.
4. Do you sell discounted supplements?
We do not sell medical products or supplements and receive no "kickback" from your supplement purchases. When supplements are indicated, we work with Fullscript to develop a supplement plan with the maximum patient discount.
5. Do you provide psychiatric diagnostic and evaluation services?
The primary focus of our clinic is to provide integrated (combined) medical and mental health care through a functional medicine approach. This ensures that body & mind (soma & psyche) are thriving as an integrated system. In certain cases, we will see patients exclusively for psychiatric services, please contact us directly for more information.
6. Do you offer psychotherapy or brain retraining?
Yes, Dr. Jacob is trained in cognitive, behavioral as well as psychodynamic therapies. He has experience guiding and supporting patients through complex health struggles, and toward living a life of greater fulfillment. Brain "retraining" is an emerging term that describes programs and models that work with patients to optimize neuroplasticity - the capacity of the nervous system to change itself - in order to address life patterns that aren't serving health. As a clinician and research neuroscientist, Dr. Jacob has the expertise to help you develop an individually-tailored approach to maximize brain health and neuroplasticity.
